Martim Magalhães

Martim was born on May 17, 1997, in Vila Real, in the north of Portugal.  Later his parents Ana and Nuno moved to a village near Lisbon, enabling Martim to take up surfing. At the age of six Martim began surfing in the Algarve with his father and friends but it wasn’t until the age of 10 that he started to train seriously at the Playsurf surf school with coach Bruno Freitas.

The following year Martim started to compete in regional surf championships, at first he preferred free surfing, but as he began to get good surf comp results he came to realise that competitive surfing was a route to take to make a career in the sport he loves.

Martim says “Thanks to competitive surfing I have got to know my home country of Portugal really well, surfing the islands of Madeira, the Azores, and more. I've met so many people and great coaches.

In 2015 I moved to Ericeira, to train and live at home with my coach, the experienced Jose Maria Pyrrait.” He also commented “My favorite waves in the Algarve are the Canal, Kanguru, Praia da Rocha, Ericeira, Coxos…and secret spot… I love to surf all types of waves, from the smallest to the big waves!”

Martim plans for 2016 are to compete across the world in the WSL WQS events, participate in the “Liga Moche” (national surf open Portugal) and compete in the world pro am Volcom that will be in Lower Trestles, California.
