Northcore™ and the Environment

We realise that as company and as surfers we have a responsibility towards the planet, to leave as small a footprint as possible.   As part of our ongoing commitment to operate as a socially and environmentally responsible organisation one of our projects is working with the Climate Neutral organisation.   They are dedicated to tackling global warming by promoting the drastic reduction of CO2 emissions by encouraging and compensating emissions by the planting of trees and funding development of renewable energy sources.

When using energy resources like fossil fuel, CO2 (carbon dioxide) and other greenhouse gasses are released into the atmosphere.   The build-up of CO2 gasses acts like a huge blanket around the earth trapping the heat and causing our atmosphere to warm up.   The impact on our world is potentially catastrophic manifesting in the form of rising sea levels, an increasing number of weather disasters and changing flora and fauna.

To help tackle the problem the Climate Neutral group are working with sustainable, long term, dedicated forestry projects throughout the world planting thousands of trees annually.   CO2 is taken out of the atmosphere by plants & trees growing and storing the CO2 in their tissue in the form of carbon replacing this with Oxygen (the O2) as a 'by-product' of this storage process.   At Northcore™ with the help of the Climate Neutral group we've calculated as accurately as possible the number of tonnes of CO2 our company emits annually, produced by driving, flying, heating and lighting of the offices and manufacturing.   This has been converted into the number of trees required to offset these emissions, to enable us to be a carbon neutral organisation.   We're proud to say that we now adopt 750 mature rainforest trees annually to help offset our CO2 emissions.   These trees are growing as part of a sustainable, locally managed re-forestation project in Malaysian Borneo.

Beyond this, we also feel that it's just as important to make practical changes to the way we run our business to reduce our impact on the planet.   So as an ongoing policy we have adopted practices such as:

As well as aiming to be a carbon neutral organisation we are also aware of the need for maintaining and improving cleaner ocean waters-its no fun realising that what you thought was a brown eel in the line up is actually something much worse!   So our parent company makes a donation annually to the great work in cleaning up our UK waters carried out by the guys at Surfers Against Sewage.
