Northcore Europe and Magicseaweed support surf crime prevention initiative.

Northcore Europe have recently donated a heap of waterproof key pouches to the South Wales police to giveaway to surfers in the area to help reduce car crime. Keep an eye out for them and keep your keys safe! Heres our press release:

Surf related car crime has been a problem for a number years especially at surfing locations close to larger urban areas. Surfers vehicles with keys hidden nearby and left unattended for hours at a time have become an easy target for criminals, a fact which hasn’t gone unnoticed by South Wales Police.

In response Porthcawl Neighbourhood Policing Team have launched Surf Watch, a summer initiative that will see police officers providing crime prevention advice and conducting high visibility patrols at popular surfing beaches like Rest Bay in order to deter car thieves.

This year, the policing team are working in partnership with surf companies Northcore and Magicseaweed, who have provided waterproof key pouches for officers to give to surfers in order to keep their vehicles safe.

The specialist Northcore waterproof, air tight pouches can be used to keep car keys secure whilst in the water, so car keys no longer have to be left hidden near the vehicle for car thieves to find.

The Surf Watch scheme was first introduced at Rest Bay two years ago by PC Chris Bluck and PCSO Leighton Rees.

PC Bluck said: “In the past two years Surfer Watch has reduced the number of thefts from vehicles in Rest Bay dramatically. We want to continue the same success with the initiative this summer.

You can easily reduce the chances of becoming a victim of crime by taking some basic security precautions. It seems obvious, but don’t leave your car keys unprotected or unattended! Many people hide their keys close to their vehicles, which leaves their belongings vulnerable to theft.

Keep your key on your person in a waterproof key pouch when surfing, ensure valuables are kept out of sight when left in your vehicle, lock roof racks containing surf boards securely and always make sure windows and doors are locked before you leave your car.”

A spokesperson for Northcore said “Northcore are really pleased to be able to assist the South Wales Police Surf Watch initiative in conjunction with Magicseaweed by supplying our waterproof key pouch to give to surfers. The Surf Watch programme is a great step towards tackling potential car crime risks and hopefully our key pouches will help reduce instances of surfer related car crime in the region”

Ben Haworth takes 2nd in first BLU event 2012

Congrats to Ben for kicking of the British Longboard Union events for 2012 with a solid 2nd place at Woolacombe. Heres the run down in Bens own words:
“The first BLU contest of year held at Woolacombe beach, Nth Devon. It was a super fun event and I think every one had a fun week end apart from the shocking surf with really strong on shore winds and a bit of rain.

Ben Haworth takes 2nd in Woolacombe

The surf on on the first day of the contest Saturday started off really good 2 – 3 foot and clean fun waves but by ten o’clock the wind started to mess the waves up and making it very hard to surf. The wind just got stronger and stronger as the day went on.
Sunday the waves were a little better but not by much, a little less wind and a few better shape waves coming through again about 2 – 3 foot waves on sunday.
So anther good result to the start of the year for me and I am amped for all the other contests this year.”
open results:
1st: Ben Skinner
2nd: Ben Haworth
3rd:Adam Griffiths
4th:Nick Dowrick

Monster Mullaghmore waves- a photo story

We received a call on Wed 07th March letting us know that a swell was forecast to hit the west coast of Ireland the following day which was predicted to be 27ft and 17 Seconds! Which when hitting the reef at Mullaghmore Co Sligo, meant monster surf. So a small crew gathered, Gabe davies, Chris McClean, Mark Waters and myself on a trip to meet Richie Fitzgerald and the gathering swell. Heres some images from Thursday 08th March when the waves Mullaghmore hit 50ft on the face:
