Can Mullaghmore and Conroy take XXL 2018 award?

The World Surf League XXL Big Wave Awards has grown since it first started 18 years ago. Back in the year 2000, there was one award recognising the surfer who rode the biggest wave. Now in its 18th season, the awards ceremony is made up of seven categories: Ride of the year, Paddle award, XXL Biggest wave, Tube of the year, Men’s best overall performance, Women’s best overall performance and Wipeout of the year. The winners will be revealed at a gala awards ceremony in April. This year, Northcore Team Rider Peter Conroy has had a wave nominated in the Ride of the year category! You can see the wave he caught below:

Peter began surfing as a teenager, his love for big waves soon developed and he now feels comfortable surfing and rescuing in anything over 20ft. He was delighted to find out his wave was up for the 2018 WSL Ride Of The Year Award. The Nominated wave was caught on a day of particular heavy swell in Mullaghmore CO Silgo, Ireland. We did a Q&A with Peter to get his thoughts on the nominated ride.

Was it a particularly big sell the day you caught the wave?

The swell was very heavy. A very large period swell with good size swell made it very tricky to surf. The paddle surfers wanted to give it a crack so Dylan and I did safety for them after we towed a few.

Were you expecting the waves to be as big as they were?

I knew it was going to be big and heavy. But how the waves break on the reef is luck of the draw. I’m just lucky I made the full ride.

Can you remember what you were thinking during the ride? And immediately after?

I just remember hoping the massive chandeliers weren’t going to take me out on the wave! Once I kicked out, I was just happy to have finished a very technical ride.

What board were you using?

I was on my trusty 5.10 JP tow board … which alas is no more. It went missing that day and hasn’t shown up since!

Did you realise how good the ride was before watching the footage back?

I knew it was a scary and technical ride, but after watching the video I knew it was special.

How did you hear about the nomination?

I left it for a few months and then got onto Guy (Videographer) and suggested we put it in for the craic and get Mully on the XXL board for this year!

What do you know about the award ceremony?

I was at the awards a few years ago for barrel of the year award – It was a fun event!

Everyone at Northcore would like to wish Peter the best with his nomination. There is no doubt that is was a special ride and great achievement to be nominated! To see all the other Big Wave Award nominated waves, head over to the WSL Website.
